Certificate of Insurance vs. Wedding Insurance: What’s the Difference?

These two get mixed up all the time — and understanding the difference can save you serious stress (and money).

Let’s simplify it.

Certificate of Insurance (COI)

A Certificate of Insurance is proof that someone already has an active insurance policy — and that The Veil Wedding Loft is listed as an Additional Insured on that policy.

This can come from:

  • Your event insurance policy

  • Or your vendor’s business insurance (DJ, caterer, bartender, florist, photo booth, etc.)

What a COI does:

  • Protects against liability claims (injuries, property damage, alcohol-related incidents)

  • Covers accidents that happen during setup, the event, or breakdown

  • Transfers financial responsibility to the insurance company instead of you

What a COI does NOT do:

  • It does not reimburse you if you cancel your wedding

  • It does not cover lost deposits

  • It does not protect your dress, rings, or personal items

Think of a COI as protection for what happens at the event.

Wedding Insurance

Wedding insurance is a policy you purchase to protect your investment in the wedding itself.

It usually includes two main types of coverage:

1. Cancellation or Postponement Coverage

  • Covers lost deposits if your wedding is canceled or delayed

  • May apply to illness, extreme weather, military deployment, or venue issues

2. Personal Property Coverage

  • Covers items like attire, rings, gifts, décor, and sometimes photography mishaps

What wedding insurance does NOT usually cover:

  • Injuries to guests

  • Damage to the venue

  • Vendor-caused accidents

Think of wedding insurance as protection for what happens to your wedding.

Do You Need Both - Certificate of Insurance and Wedding Insurance?

Short answer: We recommend it.

Here’s why couples at The Veil Wedding Loft often choose both:

  • The COI protects you from being financially responsible if something happens during your event

  • Wedding insurance protects your money if something happens before your event

Together, the Certificate of Insurance and Wedding Insurance create full-spectrum protection — from booking day to last dance.
